How the Pakistani bankers can overcome stress at work?

Stress is part of everyday life and it energizes the brain and the body to work actively to accomplish targets and goals. However, too much stress is bad as it causes a number of health issues, compromising one’s physical and mental abilities to perform his/her work.

Every job has its share of stress during work, but there are some professions where stress is a constant phenomenon. This can partly be attributed to sensitivity of work and the work/load pressure. This can lead to mistakes at work and further adding to already disturbed state of mind.

 

Banking job in Pakistan is stressful?

It is a common knowledge not only in Pakistan, but also around the world, that finance and banking related work falls under stressful occupations.

When a person has to constantly look at figures and numbers and to make sense of it without committing any mistake, this puts burden on mind. In Pakistan, over the years the job of a banker has become very stressful. H/she not only has to match figures carefully, but also to complete a number of tasks on daily basis which have increased over the time.

The attitude of senior management and higher expectations also add burden to it.

 

How to mitigate stress in banking job in Pakistan?

There are several strategies for managing stress in the banking industry in Pakistan. Some of these are as follows:

Prioritizing self-care: This includes getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and engaging in regular physical activity. Sedentary life style with sleeping late and not taking care of one’s diet increases stress. Too much use of tea, coffee or soft drinks increases stress over a longer period of time.  

Practicing mindfulness: Techniques such as meditation and deep breathing can help individuals focus on the present moment and reduce stress. Banking job requires mindfulness and alertness. A banker cannot afford to lose sight of anything, lest he has to feel sorry. A small mistake while entering the data could lead to big problems for banking professional.

Building a supportive network: Surrounding oneself with a supportive network of family and friends can help individuals cope with stress. A stress at work can be relieved to a great extent if the family members are supportive and do not cause trouble.

Time management: Prioritizing tasks and setting realistic goals can help bankers manage their workload and reduce stress. Do not wait or procrastinate things. What is done is to be done. Why not do it in the first place, and then relax. It has become a national character of us Pakistanis to keep on delaying things till the last moment. Then the things are done in hurry, leading to mistakes.

Seeking professional help: If stress becomes overwhelming, individuals may benefit from talking to a therapist or counselor. There is no harm in talking to a medical professional and discussing your issues with him/her. There are many techniques of stress relieve without medication, that can do wonders.

Encourage breaks and leisure activities: To take the mind off the work and relax, it’s important to encourage leisure activities like yoga, music, playing games, reading, etc. This takes your mind away from work related issues for some time and helps in relaxation.

Avoiding sensational content on social media: Use of social media has become part of every person’s life and banker is no exception to it. However, it is better to watch and listen to relaxing content that gives you a good feeling. Avoiding sensational news and content is a key to peaceful and relaxed mind.

Exercise: Regular exercise on daily or weekly basis or engaging in some kind of sports helps both body and mind.  The fast blood circulation and the exhaustion after a physical activity can help body relax and sleep well.

It's also important to note that bankers should maintain a good work-life balance. Taking regular breaks, disconnecting from work while at home, and finding activities outside of work that they enjoy can help reduce stress.
