Eight million rupees looted in Karachi bank heist
A group of masked gunmen carried out a daring bank heist in
Karachi, stealing over Rs8 million. Initially, the authorities believed that
four armed robbers were involved, but later, Senior Superintendent Of Police
(SSP) Junaid Shaikh of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) confirmed that a
total of six robbers, arriving on three motorcycles, managed to escape with
Rs8.7 million due to minimal resistance from the bank's security guard.
During the robbery, the assailants physically assaulted the
bank's security guard and fled the scene, taking the guard's weapon with them.
Authorities are working to access the CCTV footage outside the bank to
determine the escape route of the robbers. The police officer mentioned that,
if necessary, bank employees might also be questioned as part of the
investigation. It was noted that the weapon taken from the security guard was
discarded near the bank.

Following the heist, a substantial police presence was
deployed to the location. Sindh Caretaker Interior Minister Brig (retd) Haris
Nawaz expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of police patrolling in the area
and has instructed the Additional Inspector General (IG) to provide a
comprehensive report on the incident, including details regarding the
resistance offered by the bank's security guard.
Karachi has experienced a notable increase in crime, with
the number of individuals killed by robbers in the city reaching 104 in the
first nine months of 2023, as reported earlier this month by The News.
According to figures from the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), there
have been approximately 60,000 street crime incidents reported in the city this
year, with 59,511 such incidents occurring between January and August 2023.
