State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) sets parameters for banknote processing machines

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has taken a decision to establish standardized sorting parameters for banknote processing machines. A circular issued by the SBP on Tuesday outlined the initiative, stating that the aim is to ensure uniform results across different machines while sorting banknotes under similar conditions.

In the initial phase, the SBP has defined sorting parameters for high-end banknote processing and authentication systems (BPAS), desktop note sorting (DNS), and countertop note sorting (CNS) deployed at its premises. These parameters have been uniformly implemented across all field offices.

In the second phase, the SBP, in collaboration with banks, has undertaken the calibration of banknote processing machines in Karachi. The desired readings for each make and model have been compiled based on approved calibrations available on the web.

This move follows a circular dated September 9, 2014, where the SBP had previously issued machine fitness sorting parameters to banks, providing minimum standards for machine sorting of Pakistan rupee banknotes. Subsequently, banks acquired banknote processing machines of various makes and models, which were deployed at Cash Processing Centres (CPCs) and branches.

Banks are now instructed to calibrate all their machines at CPCs and branches in accordance with approved calibrations by December 31, 2023. The SBP has emphasized that banks utilizing processing machines must undergo testing within six months to maintain eligibility for authentication, cautioning that equipment not meeting this requirement will not be authenticated. This directive comes in response to reports of some banks facing challenges in testing their processing machines due to firmware incompatibility.
