Islamic Development Bank grants $100 million to Pakistan for
polio eradication
In a significant step towards the eradication of polio,
Pakistan has received a financial boost of $100 million from the Islamic
Development Bank (IDB), as announced by Federal Minister for Health, Dr. Nadeem
Jan. The declaration was made during the "Reaching the Last Mile"
Forum on polio at COP28 Summit in Dubai.
Dr. Nadeem Jan expressed gratitude to the Islamic
Development Bank, the UAE, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for their
support in the fight against polio. He highlighted the successful efforts made
in Pakistan towards the eradication of polio and emphasized the importance of
the financial assistance received from IDB.

The health minister pledged full determination to eradicate
polio from Pakistan and assured that the allocated grant would be utilized
efficiently with effective expenditure. He outlined the strategic pillars for
polio eradication, including collaboration and engagement with stakeholders,
integration, innovation, and investment-sensitive operations.
During a meeting with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
Co-Chairman Bill Gates in Dubai, Dr. Nadeem Jan discussed the ongoing polio
vaccination campaign in Pakistan. He provided updates on the measures being
taken to eradicate the polio virus and ensure 100 percent vaccine access to
children.

Bill Gates praised the comprehensive plan presented by the
health minister. The government of Pakistan is working under an integrated
strategy to combat polio, with a focus on achieving the broader agenda of
Global Health Security.
It's worth noting that Pakistan reported its sixth polio
case of 2023, with a nine-month-old child in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Orakzai district
becoming the latest victim of the disease. The Ministry of Health confirmed the
presence of the polio virus in the child.
