SBP rejects rumors that currency notes with pen markings are to be banned
Social media has been abuzz with
unverified reports suggesting that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) may ban
certain currency notes ahead of the 2025 budget announcement.
However, the SBP quickly dismissed
these rumors. Reports circulating on electronic media claimed that currency
notes marked with pen writing would be deemed invalid starting July 1, 2025.
This news caused some panic among the public, prompting a clarification from
the central bank.

SBP spokesperson Noor Ahmed responded
to the claims, emphasizing that no such notification had been issued. "The
reports about banning pen-marked currency notes are completely unfounded,"
he said.
He also noted that the SBP had
issued general guidelines in 2014 urging the public to avoid defacing currency.
"Currency notes are a national asset, and it is every citizen’s
responsibility to protect them," he added.
The SBP further urged the public to
disregard misinformation and rely solely on official announcements from the
central bank for accurate information.
