World Bank delegation and NADRA discuss digital development
A high-level delegation from the World Bank, led by Vyjayanti T. Desai,
Practice Manager for Digital Development in South Asia, visited the National
Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) Headquarters on Thursday to assess
Pakistan’s progress in digital transformation. The discussions primarily
centered on the development of digital identity systems and their role in
driving economic inclusion through the World Bank-backed Digital Economy
Enhancement Project (DEEP).
During the visit, NADRA’s Chairman provided an in-depth briefing on the DEEP
initiative, which is designed to promote economic growth through digitization
and encourage the nationwide adoption of digital identity frameworks. The project
is aligned with Pakistan’s broader Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)
strategy, which aims to enhance access to essential services such as
healthcare, education, and finance for all citizens.
The World Bank delegation, which included senior officials from both the
U.S. and Pakistan offices, examined NADRA’s approach to implementing digital
identity systems. They discussed how these frameworks are expected to foster
economic development, improve governance, and promote greater inclusion in
Pakistan's growing digital economy.

Ms. Desai emphasized the World Bank’s ongoing commitment to supporting
Pakistan’s digital transformation, highlighting that a robust and
well-implemented digital identity system could serve as a key driver for
economic growth and enhanced governance. “A strong digital identity
infrastructure is not just a tool for improving access to services, but also a
catalyst for broader economic and social development,” she noted.
Both NADRA and the World Bank share a vision of making Pakistan a digital
leader in South Asia, with a focus on building a secure and inclusive digital
ecosystem. This collaboration reflects their mutual goal of empowering citizens
and positioning Pakistan as a regional example of digital innovation, with DEEP
serving as a pivotal project in this effort.
